High-quality public universities, affordable tuition and one of the world's clearest routes to permanent residency — Canada is the long-term favourite for Nepali students.
Canada combines high-quality public education with a welcoming immigration system. Its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and Express Entry programs make it one of the few countries where studying can lead directly to permanent residency.
Tuition is lower than the US or Australia, and the quality of life in cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal is consistently ranked among the world's best.
Popular fields include business, computer science, nursing, engineering, and supply chain management.
Lower than US, Australia or UK for comparable quality programs.
Work up to 3 years after graduation — no job offer required.
Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs favour Canadian graduates.
24 hours per week during term — recently increased from 20.
Spouses of students can get open work permits; children can study in public schools.
Consistently ranked among the safest countries; large South Asian communities.

International students in Canada can work up to 24 hours per week during term time and full-time during scheduled breaks.
After graduation, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows you to work for up to 3 years — the length depends on your program duration. It's an open work permit, meaning no employer sponsorship needed.
PGWP experience counts toward Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry, giving graduates a strong PR pathway.
SDS (Student Direct Stream) is a faster visa process requiring a GIC, upfront tuition payment and IELTS 6.0 in each band. Non-SDS is more flexible but takes longer.
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate — you deposit CAD 20,635 with a Canadian bank before applying. It's refunded to you after arrival.
A Provincial Attestation Letter — required for most study permit applications from 2024. The university issues it after you accept your offer.
Yes, spouses of international students can apply for an open work permit, allowing them to work for any employer.
SDS: 4–6 weeks. Non-SDS: 8–12 weeks. Apply at least 3 months before your course starts.
